The Ambulatory Services Financial Counselor reports directly to the Assistant Administrator of Ambulatory Services with a dual reporting relationship to the department's Clinic Manager as applicable. The Financial Counselor is responsible for collecting time of service payments and outstanding patient balances for The Johns Hopkins Hospital, The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Community Physician practices. The Financial Counselor will be trained and certified as a Certified Application Counselor (CAC) in accordance with The Affordable Care Act. The Financial Counselor must advise and educate patients of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and University financial assistance policies and assist patients in accessing financial resources available for their care. Critical to this position is an understanding of the JHH and JHU billing systems as well as the Epic registration and scheduling system. The incumbent will obtain and verify financial or insurance information prior to the time of service. It is imperative the individual understand the importance of accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency in processing account transactions and correcting errors that may result in rebills to the insurance company. The Financial Counselor must demonstrate proficiency in detail oriented tasks that affect the accounts. Also, the incumbent must work as a team member and positively accept change.

Pay Grade: NE
A minimum of High School diploma or GED is required. Bachelor's preferred.
Must be certified as a Certified Application Counselor (CAC) in accordance with The Affordable Act within 6 months of hire or at first opportunity to sit for the exam.
Requires a minimum of one year training, educating, or counseling experience preferably in a healthcare, medical office, hospital or similar customer service environment. A minimum of 1 year of billing, registration or clinical workflow experience preferred.
Ability to closely follow policies and procedures set by the department as well as Ambulatory Services in addition to departmental and institutional billing and compliance policies.
Requires good communication, interpersonal skills and service excellence skills to communicate verbally with patients, colleagues, managers, and other JHM employees.
Requires basic problem-solving skills to complete new tasks, address issues, and knows when to ask for assistance.
Requires little assistance in completing appropriate follow through for complex tasks/issues.
Ability to carry out multiple tasks throughout one work day.
