Position Summary:

Interpret oral or sign language, or translate written text from one language into another. Serves as a medical interpreter for community patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) or hearing loss, their family members and hospital staff. Occasionally assists international patients with medical interpretation. Educates patients and families about Hopkins Health system and its administrative processes. Translates foreign language materials such as articles, correspondence and patient education documents.

B. Knowledge:

Advanced Proficiency in oral and written English and at least one foreign language.

Advanced knowledge of cultural standards and customs of the international region from which LEP community patients originate.

Good knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy required.

Basic knowledge of MS applications (Word, Excel, etc) required.

C. Skills:

High level of interpersonal and organizational skills is required to interact and interpret for LEP patients in delicate and stressful situations.

Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to work in a team environment.

Ability to make a judgment to resolve issues proactively.

D. Required Licensure,

Certification, Etc.:

RID Certification

E. Work Experience:

Work requires knowledge of general hospital policies and procedures and familiarity with patient medical care, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Previous experience working with community patients with LEP is preferred.
