Position is part of a team responsible for Precision Medicine platform applications and data management. Focus will be on bringing healthcare informatics concepts and designs to bear on transactional and research datasets to create a Continuous Learning Health System.
Describe the position’s roles & interactions:
The Precision Medicine project utilizes a multi-disciplinary team ranging from technical platform specialists (“Cloud” computing platforms), data architects (collecting, organizing, and storing highly varied data), data scientists (performing advanced modeling and analytics), and clinician scientists (driving the clinical investigations and participating directly in patient care). As a Data Engineer this person will interact directly with all of these groups at a variety of levels: Clinical Research Deans and Department Heads; administrative and technical leadership; and engineering and clinical staff. The overall project is guided by a Steering Committee, with requirements being generated by designated “Centers of Excellence” focused on specific diseases. The primary role of the Data Engineer will be to design and participate in building data architectures for the storage and management of highly diverse data sets found in healthcare.
Describe the specific systems, applications, projects for which the position is responsible:
The Precision Medicine Project is a multi-year activity focused on construction of a data platform which will facilitate, and accelerate, clinical research within JHM. Fundamental to the concept is the close coupling of what is learned via research, back in to the patient treatment workflow. Thereby creating the virtuous cycle of a Learning Health System. The “discovery” portion of the project will utilize a “big data” platform on Azure cloud service. The application framework will utilize Open Source Apache components in a Hortonworks distribution. Initially the platform will support clinical research in designated Centers of Excellence. The number of these centers and the scope of activity supported in them is expected to grow rapidly from year 2 forward. The greatest early challenge will be the preparation of our many data sets into easily useable forms for analysis. Applications will then be developed to facilitate research activities, and to insert advanced clinical models and visualizations into the workflow of practicing clinicians.
Describe scale/size of area, project and/or system supported
Initial focus is on a small number of research areas (Centers of Excellence) but all designs are Enterprise in scale. The intent is to create the platform for the next generation of Johns Hopkins research and treatment. As such the platform may grow to 100+ specialties, with use by 10,000 clinical staff. As the platform expands, integration with multi-entity consortia will become a significant feature of the platform.
List required & preferred skills specific to position:
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, biostatistics, or other medical research area.
- Direct experience with “big data” platforms and analytics – preferably the Apache Open Source stack.
- In depth experience with SQL and NOSL databases (preferably MS SQL, HBase, Hive)
- Data Pipeline design and languages (preferably Java, NiFi)
- Big data languages: R, Python.
- Medical background experience: clinical, analytic, or research
- Experience as a System Administrator
