Position Summary:

Inspects tests, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs biomedical and electromechanical devices. This work is performed under general supervision and using the tools and techniques of biomedical technology.

Education:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires the completion of formal training in a department-approved certificate program in Biomedical Technology or Electronics at a recognized technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization.
  • Additionally, must demonstrate the accomplishment of continuing education annually.

Licensure/Certification:

“Preferred Candidate Status” or Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician preferred.

Required Work Experience:

One to two years related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic familiarity with electronic equipment, biomedical equipment operations, and hospital operating procedures as acquired through an orientation period of one to three months.
  • Knowledge of electronics, safety rules, procedures and practices, including the proper use of test and safety equipment as defined by industry standards.
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications (PC- and network-based), including Windows, departmental e-mail, and custom Clinical Engineering Services database.
  • Applies biomedical technology, electrical and safety knowledge indicated herein.
  • Safely uses tools and equipment indicated herein.
  • Possesses the ability to solve problems and manage information indicated herein.
  • A demonstrated ability to test, troubleshoot and repair biomedical equipment and electromechanical devices.
  • Requires proficient written and verbal English communication skills, at least on a college level, to interact with departmental/JHM staff.
  • Identifies and avoids hazards as indicated by warning labels, signage, lights and other warning devices.
  • Performs work within reasonable lengths of time as measured against trade, industry or engineered standards.
  • All types of tools and equipment normally used in the biomedical technology trade, including specialized equipment such as electrical safety analyzers and physiologic simulators; and general equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power and hand tools.
