The Cardiovascular Technologist is under general supervision of the manager of cardiovascular lab, the Cardiovascular Tech performs a variety of technical and patient oriented duties during cardiovascular procedures, including, but not limited to cardiac catheterization, pacemaker insertions, arteriograms, venograms, digital subtractions, vascular studies, nephrostograms, angioplasty and other related studies. Equipment utilized may include, but is not limited to monitoring equipment, surgical instruments, cardiac output machine, pulse oximeter, ECG machine, intra-aortic balloon pump, cine film processor and viewer, etc. Performs invasive procedures, ECG's, monitors patients during procedures, prepares test results and data for review. Assists with pre and post procedure management of patients according to Lab guidelines. Work occasionally requires internal contacts outside the work group to exchange work related information. Contact with external contacts involves providing or receiving factual information. Requires normal courtesy and tact in dealing with others.

Requirements

  • The cardiovascular technician performs a wide range of complex technical duties utilizing knowledge and skills to ensure consistent quality patient care. 
  • Proficiency in the areas of invasive and non-invasive cardiology is required to provide accurate, safe assessment of patients through diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
  • Assist physicians in performing invasive procedures, coordinating care in an assigned room, and providing patient care. 
  • Will assist the Nurse Manager of CVIL in organizing and technical and staff activities of a cardiology cath lab.
  • Consistently operates radiographic equipment at an expert skill level as demonstrated by ability to perform required procedures and orienting new hires.
  • Routinely delivers minimal dose levels to the patient while still achieving diagnostic images.  Consistently ensures physicians practice radiation safety and comprehends dose level parameters.
  • Consistently ensures all staff in procedure room are properly protected and are educated in ionizing radiation standards.  Provides instructions/suggestions related to methods of reducing team members’ radiation exposure levels.
  • Consistently complies with CVIL guidelines to ensure accurate input of information into database systems and other imaging equipment.
  • Consistently understands and anticipates the appropriate views to best demonstrate anatomical areas of interest.
  • Routinely can correlate basic and complex variants in anatomy/physiology with radiographic images.
  • Consistently correlates procedural knowledge with imaging modality and injection rates as demonstrated by ability to instruct fellows/CVRTs in choosing correct settings.

Qualifications

  • Current radiologic technologist licensure in the State of Maryland.
  • Current registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT).
  • Current registry as Registered Cardiovascular Invasuve Specialist (RCIS) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International.
  • Current CPR certification. ACLS certification preferred.
  • Must hold IV certification by JHHCMC within 90 days of hire date.
