Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Director, Casemix Information Management, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of the Johns Hopkins Hospital charge description master (CDM). This includes working with administrative/clinical management of departments to implement changes identified by the Charge Description Master Coordinator to the CDM and to the charge tickets; 2) conduct a billing audits of target clinics and outpatient departments; 3) assisting clinical administration in implementation of CDM changes; 4) assisting patient financial-services in CDM related and claim problem resolutions; 5) following instructions if Charge Description Master Coordinator by carrying out assigned activities to assure up-to-date CDM and charge tickets.


A. Education:

A bachelor's degree in Health Care related fields, Finance or Business Administration or equivalent work experience. 10 years required in Health information related fields may substitute.

B. Knowledge:

Requires knowledge of medical terminology, billing requirements and health care information system. Requires knowledge of ICD-9, CPT, HCPCS, and UB92 codes along with their assignment and compatibility. Requires a knowledge of anatomy, physiology (as defined by the Medical Diagnostic categories), and all body systems. Requires general understanding regarding the State of Maryland HSCRC regulations.

C. Skills:

Requires strong interpersonal communication skills; the ability to interact and communicate effectively with department management and staff is essential. Demonstrated ability to read and understand complex billing and compliance regulations, especially as they relate to coding and billing. Requires the ability to execute multiple tasks under guidance of CDM Coordinator.

D. Required Licensure, Certification, Etc.:

Coding certification required CPC, CPC-H or CCS. EPIC Certification strongly preferred.

Minimum of 6 years of Health Information Management experience in an acute hospital environment is preferred.

PC and PC applications and ability to use standard office equipment. Proficiency with KEANE, is preferred and Excel, is required.
