The On-call Chaplain is responsible for providing emotional and spiritual care to patients, patients' families, and staff and reports directly to the Director of Chaplaincy Services. The Department of Chaplain Services is under the direct supervision of the Director of Chaplaincy Services and is advised by the Committee on Chaplaincy Services. Supports and embraces cultural and spiritual diversity, inclusion and inter-faith ministry. The position will comply with Standard hospital policy and procedures including: attendance, required meetings, training and health screenings.


  1. Serves as the primary on-call chaplain for assigned shift and maintains a working relationship between hospital departments and the department of chaplaincy services, responding to referrals from interdisciplinary team members.
  2. Provides chaplain care and pastoral visits for patients, and families seeking consultation for support and spiritual concerns, facing surgery or other means of physical care or crisis intervention including responding to hospital pages and codes.
  3. Responds to requests for chaplain care at the hospital both on site within 15 minutes and off-site within one hour of the contact.
  4. Makes referrals for community clergy; Roman Catholic Priest, Rabbi and Imam.
  5. Supports staff in dealing with their emotion in loss by organizing debriefings and critical incident stress groups.
  6. Where indicated, provides religious rituals upon request for patients, families, and staff and creates sacred space to support requests.
  7. Makes weekly rounds during in oncology, ICU, emergency and medical surgical units during the assigned shift.
  8. Provides and has knowledge of spiritual assessments and provides proficient documentation in the Electronic Medical Record, including responding to requests in EPIC for patient visits.
  9. Supplies Chaplaincy Services literature and sacred readings as requested.
  10. Provides for occasional ecumenical and inter-faith services as needed during religious holidays including Sundays and other faith holidays.
  11. Assist when requested to support department special events, i.e., Clinical Pastoral Education Program, Hospital and Nursing Week, grief education, memorial services.
  12. Functions in such a manner that reflects the mission and vision of the institution.
  13. Completes other functions as may be assigned by the Director of Chaplaincy Services.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor of Science degree.
  2. Work towards or holds a Masters degree in theological education (optional but desirable).
  3. Endorsement by a recognized faith group, ecclesiastical endorsement or is commissioned by respective faith group. Is in good standing in a faith group.
  4. One unit of completed ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education.
  5. Certification as a Certified Chaplain in one of the cognate chaplain groups, i.e., the Association of Professional Chaplains; the National Association of Catholic Chaplains; The National Association of Jewish Chaplains or is board certified eligible (optional but desirable).
  6. Beginner to intermediate skills in Microsoft Suites, Excel, Power Point and MS Word with ability to produce department documents and update statistical record-keeping on patient visits
