Position Summary:

The Clinical Dietitian works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary health team to promote wellness, maintain current health, and/or intervene in acute or chronic illness. Plans and calculates nutrition support for therapeutic diets based on patients’ health care needs. Instructs patients and their families on nutrition. Charts and documents patients’ progress and performs other professional duties.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of food science, biochemistry, physiology, management science, behavioral science and social science as applied to human nutrition.

Education:

Requires a Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university.

None. Entry-level position.

Skills:

Requires a relatively high level of analytical ability to assess patient conditions, plan suitable diets and evaluate response.

Exhibits communication skills necessary to interpret age-specific responses to assessment, treatment, and interactions with others.

Requires substantial interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians and other health care professionals, and to provide nutritional instruction.

Requires ability to assist in supervision of support staff.

Required Licensure, Certification:

Registered Dietitian eligible. Must become RD within 3 months of hire.

Must acquire licensure as a Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist in Maryland within 1 month of hire or passing of RD exam.

Working Conditions:

Work in normal office and patient care areas where there are no physical discomforts, noise, dust and the like.

Work may result in mental/visual fatigue due to reading and documenting patients’ progress.

Work requires walking and standing.

Work requires manual dexterity and keyboarding capability.

Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
