The Core Service Specialist will ensure that the preregistration process is performed to completion. This process ensures that insurance verification, obtaining referral/authorization, obtaining precertification (when applicable), financial work-up, and documentation of notes are obtained for inpatient and outpatient services. The CSS will assist in maintaining financial records according to departmental protocol. The CSS will provide patients with educational material and physician information when required.


Full-time, Day Shift

8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Work Location: Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center, Baltimore, MD


Associate's degree required (4 years of equivalent related work experience may be substituted). Bachelor's degree preferred.

Required Licensure, Certification, etc.

EPIC certification required within 90 days. Medical terminology certification a plus.


Three (3) years related medical office, hospital, medical call center or similar customer service environment. Extensive medical insurance processing, medical billing experience preferred.


<span style="font-family: "Arial", sans-serif;">Comprehensive medical and insurance terminology; comprehensive knowledge of hospital

<span style="font-family: "Arial", sans-serif;">and physician referral protocols; comprehensive knowledge of medical insurance plans,

<span style="font-family: "Arial", sans-serif;">billing and regulations, especially managed care plans; PC word processing; PC

<span style="font-family: "Arial", sans-serif;">spreadsheet applications; familiar with regulatory agencies (HSCRC, HCFA, etc.) and

their impact on health service financing.


Keyboard – Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute. Requires excellent verbal communication, telephone manner, interviewing and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, members of the health care team and external agencies. Requires analytical skills

to resolve problems associated with appointment scheduling and scheduling protocols and

to provide patients and referring physicians with information and assistance in scheduling. Requires analytical ability to perform calculations for financial work up and deductibles.

Working Conditions:

Works in normal office environment where there is little discomfort to due to the extremes of heat, dust, noise, temperature and the like
