Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP) is in search of a Director of Operations for its Hospital-Based Medicine service line. The JHCP Hospital Based Medicine Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians with a dotted reporting relationship to the JHCP Physician Section Chief of Hospital Based Medicine. In partnership with the section chief, the Director is responsible for the hospital based medicine programs at Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital. The total program size includes 130 physician/APP FTEs, $37m gross revenue and more than 28,000 discharges across the three hospitals. The Director works closely with JHCP departments of medical affairs, human resources and finance. The Director works closely with each hospital-based President, Vice President of Medical Affairs, finance lead and operations lead.

The Director will partner with the JHCP Physician Section Chief of Hospital Based Medicine to ensure the highest quality of care, service, and efficiency are delivered to patients. The Director role integrates the responsibilities of a hospital Director with those of a medical group practice Director. Core responsibilities include: business process/operations, patient experience, quality improvement, risk management, revenue cycle maximization, annual budget development, financial management, provider onboarding, and program development. The Director supervises the administrative staff within the group. The Director understands practices at the three hospitals and takes steps to standardize into best practices across hospitals whenever possible. The Director measures and communicates clinical and financial outcomes and leads process improvements based on these metrics.

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or related field required.

  • Knowledge/Skills: Ability to understand and navigate complicated governance/leadership structures. Ability to communicate with persistence and assertiveness combined with tact and diplomacy. Demonstrate data analysis skills. Understand quality-/performance-based reimbursement and relation to hospital. Understand patient satisfaction measures and scores including HCAHPS. Understand commonly used hospital terminology, including procedure codes, RVUs, direct and indirect costs, average length of stay, case mix index. Understand basics of Medicare and Medicaid physician reimbursement methodologies and the Maryland Hospital Services Cost Review Commission methodology. Familiarity with laws and regulations related to quality, including Joint Commission, NCQA, PQRI, HEDIS, CMS Core Measures, hospital credentialing and peer review. Understand hospital medicine’s ability to impact utilization and related cost savings. Understand performance metrics including length of stay, readmission rates, customer service, employee engagement, etc. and the financial impact of metrics on each hospital. Understand professional fee billing, charge capture, revenue cycle, coding and documentation, CPT/HCPCS codes, and ICD10. Ability to multi-task and manage several ongoing projects. Familiarity with physician compensation programs. Understand principles of physician and staff recruitment, onboarding, discipline, performance development, and mentoring. Understand types of IT systems and applications used in a hospital-based medical practice including physician practice and billing systems (professional fee billing), hospital administrative systems (registration and billing) and clinical systems (electronic medical record).

  • Work Experience: Seven to ten plus years of progressively responsible experience including 3-5 years of management experience required. Financial management experience required. Experience in both hospital administration and medical group management preferred.
