Leads the design, development, documentation, and management of ETL (Exchange, Transfer, Load) processes for the data warehouses. Leads the design of technical and functional requirements for data integration projects. Advises and recommends best practices for design, development, and testing of ETL processes. In collaboration with the reporting manager and data warehouse manager leads the alignment of the ETL environments with operational and business needs and strategies. This position will be responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of ETL mappings for multiple development projects. Will lead the interaction with business users and decision support staff as part of the support work for error resolution and design enhancements. Assist in the development of reporting and analytics solutions for the data warehouse. Will assist in setting the direction for data quality initiatives to profile and cleanse data prior to loading into the warehouse. Will work closely with the data architect to ensure that the models are loaded with effective and efficient ETL practices. Evaluates reported defects and performance problems related to ETL. Participates in setting and enforcing departmental standards for analysis, development and quality assurance within the ETL process.


  1. Education:

Requires a degree in Computer Science or related technology field; Master’s Degree Preferred.

Work experience may substitute for some educational requirements.

B. Knowledge:

Requires a thorough knowledge of data warehouse and data management principles and processes.
Understand ETL advanced concepts of data flow, data enrichment, data consolidation, change data capture and transformation.
Understands the range of options and best practices for common ETL design techniques such as change data capture, key generation and optimization.

Significant experience with data quality, data profiling, metadata management and reporting.

Experience with all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

Strong proficiency in SQL programming, query writing, query performance tuning, and database technologies.

Knowledge of medical coding systems, i.e. ICD9, CPT, HCPCS, ACGs is desirable. Knowledge of data modeling, process modeling, data warehouse, and data management principles and processes preferred.

C. Skills:

Requires strong SQL, analytical, and computational skills.
Expertise and experience in the use of an ETL development tool (Informatica PowerCenter, DataStage, Business Objects Data Integrator, Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services)
The ability to read data model (ER) diagrams.

Should possess strong leadership skills. Advanced interpersonal skills to interface effectively with department heads, employees, clients, consultants and JHHC and JHMCIS staff. Effective communication skills for interaction with staff, peers and customers. Experience with data modeling tools and software preferred. Must be able to work as a member of a problem solving team.

Must be able to read and understand software application manuals related to job tools.

E. Work Experience:

Data Warehouse Specialist I

5+ years experience with ETL tools and ETL programming.

3+ years experience designing ETL solutions for data migration or data integration.

10+ years experience with IT projects and software development
1+ years of SQL Server experience

Additional education may be substituted for some experience.

Works effectively with PC productivity tools e.g. MS Office as required. Development tools such as Data Services, Informatica, Embarcadero, Red Gate, Microsoft SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, SharePoint integration, SQL Programming, SQL server management studio, relational databases. Web Technologies, MS SQL Server 2008/2010/2014, Oracle, IBM DB2, ODBC, OLE DB, Active Directory
