Registered Nurse 1: Medical Intensive Care Unit

All new graduate nurses are automatically enrolled in the yearlong Adult or Pediatric Nurse Residency Program (NRP) to facilitate the successful transition to professional nursing practice. Those hired into an ICU are also enrolled in an “ICU Orientation” program.

The Medical Intensive Care Unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital specializes in the care of a high acuity patient population with complex medical diagnoses. The majority of our diagnoses include, but are not limited to: end stage renal & hepatic disease, multisystem organ failure, newly diagnosed or existing autoimmune & pulmonary disorders, the critically ill antepartum/ postpartum patient, the critically ill oncology patient. 24-bed unit. New grad orientation is 17 weeks in length.


Candidate qualifications for the Registered Nurse 1 position on the Medical ICU:

  1. Associate Degree candidates* from an accredited nursing program will be considered; provided they are either currently, or will be enrolled in an accredited RN to BSN program.
  2. Bachelor’s or Master's Degree from an accredited nursing program preferred.
  3. Maintain active RN licensure in the state of Maryland
  4. No RN work experience required
  5. 120 ICU pracitcum hours required

*Per JHH Nursing Policy: If you do not currently possess a BSN or MSN degree, by accepting this offer of employment, you certify your understanding of the following: (a) you must provide proof of BSN or MSN degree program acceptance to your hiring manager within your first year of hire; (B) you must complete the BSN or MSN degree program no later than five years from program enrollment; and (c) you must make steady progress toward completing the program by taking a minimum of nine credits within 12 months of initial enrollment and each year thereafter.

The Registered Nurse 1 on the Medical ICU is responsible for:

-Coordinating care for assigned patients to promote the achievement of clinical outcomes.

-Providing evidence-based patient care based on the JHH nursing process, policy, procedures.

-Participating and promoting departmental and hospital safety standards.

-Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships with a multidisciplinary health care team

-Ability to analyze data and make judgments regarding optimal patient care.

-Practicing responsible cost-effective use of resources.
