May be required to be on call to support the JHH Office of Emergency Management in emergency situations .On occasions, weekend work will be required for events, breaking news issues and when this person is on-call, which occurs a few times per year

Position Summary:

The Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of the top 5 hospitals in the country, is searching for a Sr. Communications Specialist to join the internal communications team. Are you are an experienced communications professional with strong writing/editing and project management skills? We’d love to speak with you! This is hybrid position.

The person in this role will: Serve as a trusted internal communications partner and strategic advisor to Johns Hopkins Hospital leadership and departments to provide effective and ongoing communication to internal audiences; Develop and implement internal communications strategies; manage large-scale projects/campaigns that engage and inspire employees around hospital and institutional goals and priorities; Build strong, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders and serve on cross functional teams that involve coordination with the central JHM Marketing and Communications department and colleagues across the enterprise.

Education:

Master's of Bachelor's degree in life sciences, science writing, journalism or communications required. Advance degree in related field preferred.

Department Preferred Education: Master's or Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations or closely related field required. Advanced degree in related field preferred.

Work Experience:

A minimum of five years of experience in journalism, media relations or public affairs is required. Will accept a Master's degree with three years of experience. Requires demonstrated experience in high quality writing and editing, experience seeking out stories, formulating pitches and drafting press releases; working successfully on deadline and designing and implementing communications plans and strategies. Demonstrated experience in supervising and implementing effective external and internal communications plans and strategies and in editing/writing high-quality mainstream media content or in academic publications.

Department Preferred Experience: A minimum of five years of related experience working in journalism, internal communications, public relations or closely related field required. Advanced degree in related field preferred. Requires a strategic thinker with demonstrated experience developing implementing communications plans and strategies for diverse internal audiences across multiple communications channels, strong project management, high quality writing/storytelling and editing and working successfully within established deadlines. Health care experience desirable.

Knowledge:

Demonstrated experience in supervising and implementing effective external and internal communications plans and strategies in editing/writing publications; experience in working with national and regional news media; and knowledge of academic medical center culture and organization. Depending on area of focus, demonstrated experience with scientific and technical writing may be necessary. Effective use of communication tools, including print, Web, media relations, electronic media and other e-communication tools; AP Style and ability to apply institutional style standards consistently. Requires familiarity and comfort with biomedical terminology. Familiarity with media tracking services and databases preferred.

• Build strong, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders; serve on cross functional teams that involve coordination with hospital leadership, the JHM Marketing and Communications department and colleagues across the enterprise.

• Demonstrate proven skills in creative storytelling and complex narrative writing and editing; ability to translate medical and technical information and tailor content to engage diverse internal audiences across multiple communications channels.

• Strong communication skills and proven ability to precisely and objectively communicate information and give and receive clear messages.

• Strong project management and organizational skills and attention to detail; Work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects at once, while setting and meeting demanding deadlines.

• Sound judgment and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Skills:
Proven skills in complex narrative writing and editing, including the ability to translate medical, technical, scientific or statistical information for lay and other audiences. Requires strong communication skills and proven ability to precisely and objectively communicate information and give and receive clear messages; ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritizing and managing multiple projects at once, while setting and meeting demanding deadlines; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; sound judgment and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; demonstrated excellence in narrative writing and editing. Ability to work professionally and effectively with institutional leadership.
