The Sonographer II demonstrates an expanding knowledge base in the management of diagnostic testing for specific types of patient populations. The Sonographer II applies more in-depth clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills. Demonstrates an increased capacity to problem-solve through application of testing modalities. Demonstrates and completes unit-specific Competent Clinical Pathway.


  1. Proficiency to work independently and perform department specific procedures, as applicable to ensure quality images and patient care
  2. Possesses ability to triages and prioritize patient care, ensure clinical data is correct and appropriate for exam/test requested to minimize the need for clinical oversight
  3. Selects appropriate equipment with minimal oversight to optimize diagnostic quality and meet the patient’s specific needs
  4. Identifies problems and offers solutions by bringing issues to the appropriate leaders for solution
  5. Demonstrates critical thinking skills to ensure patient safety and maximize diagnostic efficiency
  6. Works closely with peers and physicians to ensure high quality patient care and diagnostic imaging
  7. Differentiates need for assistance and immediate action to maintain patient and team member safety
  8. Demonstrates an awareness of cultural/ethical issues and recognizes patient and family diversity in accordance with JHACH diversity goals
  9. Performs accurate diagnostic sonography on patients with and without complex disease processes in a segmental approach as outlined in departmental procedure with excellent diagnostic image results
  10. Produces optimal images and accurate data to best support the providers’ diagnostic efforts


  • Graduate of an approved diagnostic medical sonography program with minimum of one year experience
  • Specialty registry through ARDMS or CCI
  • Current BLS certification, AHA
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
