Position Summary:

Reports to the HATS Manager, Transfusion Coordinator Supervisor or Transfusion Coordinator II. Reviews patient’s medical history and current physical finding and defines a transfusion protocol for assigned group of patients requiring platelet and red blood cell transfusions. After reviewing the current clinical condition and lab results, establishes transfusion thresholds for patients to avoid catastrophic bleeding events. Assigns blood products based on the patients specific needs, and HLA typing. Evaluates reactions to blood products and recommends appropriate premedications and/or manipulation of products needed for subsequent transfusions. Projects, orders and maintains the platelet and white blood cell inventory for the hospital. Takes 24 hour call, covering platelet and white blood cell needs for all patients in JHH.

Education:

A Baccalaureate Degree in related medical field (example: Medical Technology, Nursing, PA, or Biology to include a supervised clinical internship in an approved blood bank or blood collection facility and/or equivalent education and training in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, Nursing(RN or NP, PA), or health sciences related field.

Work Experience:

A minimum of one year clinical experience in an approved blood bank laboratory or blood collection facility or in a role with equivalent experience with blood transfusions or related medical facility

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory tests including HLA and ABO typing, in addition to familiarity with clinical and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze clinical, technical and scientific data. Performs assessments with the highest degree of accuracy and to correlate normal tests results in a healthy state to anomalous test results and the presence of disease. Ability to perform successfully despite sudden deadlines and changing priorities, maintaining personal composure in high stress situations. Ability to exercise initiative and judgment.
  • Ability to maintain effective communication skills with other health-care professionals and within the department. Ability to work independently, accurately determining and assigning appropriate blood products and transfusion plans.
  • Ability to troubleshoot abnormal clinical lab results.
  • Ability to assist in the training of new employees, students, residents and physicians in Transfusion Medicine and other Departments throughout the hospital. Ability to use and understand the OCIS Blood Ordering System, Pathology Data Systems (PDS), EPR patient data system, Sunrise, EPIC and the Transfusion Medicines Blood Bank computer system reference materials.
