Position Summary:

Under direction of the Admissions Office Manager, coordinates inpatient admissions and financial clearance for the Department of Psychiatry from the Psychiatry Admissions Office, the Emergency Department, and Psychiatry Inpatient Units.

Psychiatry

The PDC Registrar is responsible for ensuring a seamless admission process to include: interviewing patients/family members/ representatives for patient demographic and insurance information, verifying insurance coverage (using various telephonic, fax, and online systems), advising patients of financial liability, obtaining precertification and courtesy reviews with various insurance providers, having patients/family members/representatives complete registration and financial paperwork, updating various registration systems, coordinating patient admissions with Psych inpatient units, coordinating patient transfers and transport to other facilities if there are no appropriate bed availability, and decompressing patients with active mental ailments.

The PDC Financial Counselor is responsible for adhering to psychiatric patient care standards and all JHHS and JHU financial components of admitting a patient to include: insurance verification, determining benefits eligibility, confirming preauthorization requirements, obtaining JHU precertification, reviewing patient financial information, determining financial liability, collecting time of service (TOS) payments, establishing payment arrangements, assisting patients in applying for financial assistance, generating third party claims, and account follow up for continued stay coverage. This position is responsible for informing the patient/guarantor of all financial liabilities and documenting pertinent information into appropriate systems for inpatient admissions. This position requires a clear understanding of the revenue cycle and professional competence in reviewing and securing all appropriate financial resources for patients to maximize reimbursement to the Health System. Assisting the receivable processing unit, this position also requires operating knowledge of payer contracts and computer systems at affiliate locations. The position requires primary patient/family contact on and off the medical unit to ascertain appropriate insurance coverage, financial documentation completion, and to initiate applications for other sources of funding.

Competencies:

A. Education:

Minimum High School Degree required. An Associate’s degree preferred.

Salary Range: Minimum 18.87/hour - Maximum 31.15/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
