Oncology Social Worker
Position Summary
The Oncology Social Worker provides psychosocial support, counseling, and care coordination to cancer patients and their families at Sibley, primarily in the outpatient setting. This role collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, case managers, and community partners to address emotional, practical, and financial needs throughout the cancer care journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide counseling and supportive services to patients and families coping with cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship
- Assess psychosocial needs and coordinate referrals for community, financial, and supportive resources
- Facilitate cancer support groups and participate in cancer center programs and events
- Support complex discharge planning and collaborate on multidisciplinary care plans
- Serve as a consultant to physicians, staff, and case management regarding psychosocial issues and post-treatment needs
- Assist patients with transportation, insurance, disability, and other access-to-care concerns
- Coordinate referrals to protective services, elder care resources, and other specialized community services as needed
- Document interventions and case activities in the medical record
- Promote effective communication across care settings to ensure smooth patient transitions
- Participate in staff education, hospital committees, and ongoing professional development
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited program
- Active Social Work license in the District of Columbia
- 2–5 years of social work experience in a healthcare setting; oncology experience preferred
- Current CPR certification required
- Strong communication, counseling, and care coordination skills
- Knowledge of community resources and patient support services
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work flexible hours as needed
Salary Range: Minimum 37.58/hour - Maximum 61.99/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
