Sibley Memorial Hospital is a non-profit, full service 318 bed acute care community hospital serving the Washington, DC area. Sibley offers medical, surgical, intensive care, obstetric, oncology, orthopedic and skilled nursing inpatient services, as well as a 24-hour Emergency Department. SUMMARY
Performs all aspects of routine histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Accessions cases and verifies accurate patient and case information. Processes and embeds tissue, cuts tissue blocks, and mounts cut material on slides. Stains and coverslips slide for routine H&E stains, special stains, and immunohistochemistry stains. Sections slide for IHC. Prepares controls for IHC and special stains. Maintains daily QC. Validates new antibodies and stains. Check stains before sending slides to a pathologist. Performs tasks requiring independent judgment and responsibility with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs histology procedures, including embedding, microtomy, routine & special stains, IHC stains (as needed), coverslipping, and labeling.
Performs and evaluates quality control checks on chemicals, tissue, cell preparations, and equipment.
Effectively uses PC to perform clerical and data processing duties for each surgical, cytology, or autopsy specimen received in the section.
Handling infectious tissue and/or HIV-positive specimens will be necessary. The practice of Universal Precautions is mandatory. Additional protective equipment (space suits) may need to be used.
Prepares tissue processors for overnight processing. Handles flammable/toxic chemicals while removing and filling solvent containers and reservoirs and performing checks to ensure proper equipment function.
Embed surgical and cytology specimens into paraffin blocks at 30 blocks per hour.
Can recognize acceptable vs. unacceptable staining results. Unacceptable results are not submitted to the pathologist without prior communication. Unresolved staining problems have been brought to the attention of the supervisor.
Familiar with the various categories and theories of immunological and special stains. Either demonstrates the ability to recall necessary information and/or efficiently utilize reference materials.
Follows the laboratory standard for each immuno/special stain procedure.
Correctly selects and sequences chemical solutions and performs appropriate preparation and maintenance techniques to assure consistent staining results.
Select appropriate controls and include them with each patient case.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• HT/HTL (ASCP) and QIHC (ASCP) REQUIRED.
AND
Must meet two or more of the following requirements 1 through 4:
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.
- Successful completion 3 years of academic study (minimum of 90 semester hours) which meet specific requirements for entrance into a school of medical technology and has successfully completed a course of training of at least 12 months in such a school.
- Bachelor's Degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences and has at least 1 year of pertinent full-time laboratory experience and/or training in the specialty or sub-specialty in which the individual performs tests.
- Successful completion of 3 years (90 semester hours) of college with the following distribution of
courses:
a. For those whose training was completed prior to September 15, 1963: at least 24 semester hours in chemistry and biology courses of which at least 6 hours were in inorganic chemistry and at least 3 hours in other chemistry courses; pertinent to medical science.
b. For those whose training was completed after September 14, 1973, 16 hours in chemistry courses which include at least 6 hours in inorganic chemistry and which are acceptable toward a major in chemistry, 16 hours in biology courses which are pertinent to the medical sciences and are acceptable toward a major in biology, 3 hours of mathematics and has experience and/or training covering several fields of medical laboratory work of at least 1 year and of such quality as to provide him/her with education and training in medical technology equivalent to that described
in paragraph 1-3.
c. With respect to individuals qualifying prior to July 1971, the technologist:- was performing the duties of a clinical laboratory technologist at any time between July 1, 1961, and January I, 1968, and
- has had at least 10 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience prior to January I, 1968. (This required experience might be met by the substitution of education for experience.)
- Achieves a satisfactory grade in a proficiency examination approved by the Secretary of HHS.
Required Licensure, Certification, On-going Training:
- HT/HTL (ASCP) and required QIHC (ASCP) required
Work Experience:
- Minimum 1 year, refer to work experience requires based on Education
Salary Range: Minimum 35.00/hour - Maximum 57.71/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
