Location: 600 N. Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21287

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides direct psychological, social, and practical care to a select caseload of patients and families including assessments, problem identification, goal setting, and intervention and implementation of plans. Makes referrals to outside agencies; coordinates continuity of care. Serves as a clinical resource in a specialty area. Coordinates improvement in departmental unit and the organizational system to benefit patient care/outcomes. Supervises assigned staff. Provides administrative leadership in the absence of the Director. May be expected to provide on-call coverage, as needed. Functions as a mentor for others. Provides clinical oversight and consultation.

COMPETENCIES:

A. Education:

- MSW degree from an accredited school of social work.

- Knowledge of biopsychosocial and cultural elements of clinical social work practice

- Knowledge of procedures, systems and organization objectives used within social work.

- Knowledge of current health care environment

- Knowledge of and ability to gather relevant data to synthesize. Summarizes information in making judgments regarding patient care.

- Knowledge of medical and psychosocial sequelae of course of illness and impact on social functioning (may be specific to patient population).

- Knowledge of relevant community resources commensurate with illness, symptoms, mental status and impairments in functioning.

It is expected that the Senior Clinical Social Worker will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

1B. Clinical:
- Advanced application of social work knowledge of psychodynamics with a broad application of social work theory.
2B. Program Coordinator:
- Knowledge of patient population needs and understanding of program elements required to mitigate deficits.
3B. Administrative Supervision:
- Knowledge of supervisory principles, leadership and management
methods/strategies.
- Understands management systems within the health care environment (team, functional unit, hospital).
C. Skills:
- Consultant to other professionals concerning the environmental and psychosocial patterns of patients and families as requested. Ability to identify the environmental and psychosocial patterns of patients/families and incorporate in patient/family goals/plan of care.
- Consults within hospital and other agencies concerning psychosocial care of patients. Applies biophysical and cultural concepts in the development of the psychosocial plan when consulting with hospital, personnel and other agencies.
- Communicates, explains, interprets, shares and/or presents biopsychosocial cultural concepts of the practice of clinical social work to employees and management staff at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and appropriate external agencies.
- It is expected that the Senior Clinical Social Worker will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

- Analyzes patient needs at a micro and macro level, develops associated treatment modalities at a clinically complex level, and provides effective counseling.
- Develops and implements clinical social work practice standards.
- Demonstrates expertise concerning the psychosocial care of a specialized patient
population.
- Utilizes expertise in individual/group dynamics.
2C. Program Development:
- Supervises and coordinates activities of assigned social work staff.
- Develops and implements programmatic response to patient and staff needs.
