Job Summary

The Director, Patient Safety (PS) for the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) has primary oversight of the organization-wide patient safety program. The Director, PS provides the leadership for supporting and developing a culture of safety, fairness, transparency, teamwork and patient-centeredness; and in identifying opportunities and initiatives to enhance patient safety. The Director, PS will build and drive high reliability principles across the organization.

Utilizing knowledge of evidence-based practice, safety science, experience of frontline clinical operations and methods of improvement, the Director, PS leads the activities of the patient safety committee(s), educates other practitioners on the system-based causes for medical error, and communicates literature-based ideas regarding effective patient safety strategies to others within the organization.

Along with hospital clinical and executive leadership, the Director, PS develops strategic and operational plans that build upon the existing patient safety programs to assure JHH continues to be a national leader in its approaches to patient safety. Through collaboration and partnerships, the Director, PS develops programs and services that produce measurable improvements in processes and practices that affect patient safety.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Master’s degree in healthcare related field; clinical background required (examples could include nurse, social worker, pharmacist, PA, etc).
  • Required Licensure Certification, etc.
  • State board licensure in nursing, social work, physical therapy, respiratory, pharmacy or profession of relevance. Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS), preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of clinical experience (e.g. nursing, social work, pharmacy) and 5 years of experience in patient safety including leading the work of others or progressive leadership experience.
