Position Summary: The CAO Emergency Medicine has overall responsibility for the successful development, implementation and advancement of programmatic strategies and initiatives for the Department of Emergency Medicine. The incumbent leads the development, coordination and integration of emergency services across the region including clinical operations, training and research activities, network affiliations and quality and performance improvement across all JHM entities and affiliates. The CAO will collaborate with dedicated professionals committed to the mission of providing outstanding emergency care, performing impactful research and meaningful education. Requires a deep level of understanding of EMS systems and engagement and/or experience with pre-hospital care. Interacting with JHM leadership in multiple JHHS/JHU entities, departments and schools; and with a variety of external stakeholders. Collaborates in local and state government as well as in national emergency medicine organizations and disaster management. The CAO works to further the clinical and academic missions of emergency medicine.
With a deep understanding and appreciation for academic medicine and with a high degree of financial acumen, the CAO has direct responsibility for the clinical and financial operations of the Department of Emergency Medicine for both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The CAO will have knowledge of the unique operational challenges, metrics driving quality of care, and reimbursement in the emergency medicine industry. The CAO also works closely with administrators and clinical leaders of other departments to assure the highest quality of care for our patients.
The CAO is charged with the development, design, implementation and management of improved processes or programs that will move emergency medicine toward the vision and strategic goals of JHM. The CAO will also represent the department to local, regional and national level EMS and emergency medicine groups.

Reporting Relationship
The CAO reports directly to Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine, the COO for JHH and the CFO for the SOM

Required Qualifications and Experience
• Master’s degree in business, health care administration, or related field
• 10 years of progressive experience as an administrator at a complex academic health system, navigating multiple entities and priorities. Experience in Emergency medicine is highly desirable
• Experience working with Emergency Medical Services personnel
• Demonstrated record of related accomplishments along with strong financial and analytic capabilities
• Demonstrated experience in business development
• Demonstrated experience in disaster management
• Exposure to research and clinical trials
• Scholarship and teaching acumen
• Understanding of theory and application of work process improvement tools, including safe and efficient clinical practice and service excellence
• Entrepreneurial skills are required to develop new services, streamline current services, redefine product lines, and integrate the services across the JH Health System
