The Artist-In-Residence will support the initiatives of the Arts in Health Program through theimplementation of musical experiences and processes in a variety of settings within Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Programming will help children meet the social and emotional challenges of illness as they discover their own creative resources through music activities that focus on expression, play and fun. Artists are trained and supervised by the Child Life Department and may supervise the work of volunteers.

Competencies:

Education:

Bachelors or Master’s Degree in a related field, such as Master of Music, etc.

Knowledge:

Use music expertise to facilitate learning, exploration, discovery and expression that is

unique to each child and teen.

A professional level of knowledge of theoretical rationale in the musician’s core discipline.

Knowledge of child development that supports ability to interact appropriately with

hospitalized children

Knowledge of disciplines’ Code of Ethics

Skills:

Ability to plan music programming with consultation from child life staff based on

psychosocial and developmental needs of patients.

Strong interpersonal skills in email correspondence, phone communication and

in-person interactions, with children, families, medical staff, colleagues and external partners.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Time management and organizational skills, including attention to detail.

Ability to facilitate a variety of group and individual music activities that promote development,

self-expression and mastery.

Ability to provide continuous attention to patients and families, determining their needs,

monitoring their behavior during art experience.

Multi-cultural skills to interact with patients, families, and staff.

Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and solve problems.

Basic supervisory skills used to direct volunteers.

A good sense of humor.

Required Licensure Certification, etc.
