The Occupational Therapist, Psychiatry provides medically prescribed occupational therapy services to inpatients and/or outpatients to restore function, and assist the patient in reaching his/her maximum capabilities to assume a place in society while learning to live within the limits of their disability. The job duties are to provide assessments and treatments, but do not involve invasive procedures. Work frequently requires internal contacts outside the work group to exchange work-related information. Contact with external contacts involves providing or getting factual information. Requires normal courtesy and tact in dealing with others.

Schedule: 7:30 AM- 3:30 PM 

Requirements

  • Employee demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the age of the patients served on his/her unit as indicated by the following:
    • Demonstrates ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
    • Identifies the physical, motor, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics for age group(s) served.
    • Demonstrates age appropriate communication skills.
    • Demonstrates ability to provide the care needed as described in the job description and the department's scope of service for the patient groups under his/her care.
    • Identifies uncertainties and seeks out necessary information to treat patients successfully and safely.
    • Demonstrates ability to adjust communication based on patient’s age and understanding.
    • Renders care to patients in the following age groups:
      ( ) Neonates ( x ) Pediatrics ( x ) Adolescents ( x ) Adults ( x ) Geriatrics
  • Responsible for attending mandatory departmental and unit meetings, interdisciplinary team meetings or discharge rounds (1 North) as appropriate. Participates on committees and performance improvement teams to improve patient care delivery.
  • For full-time/part-time staff organizes and coordinates the Psychiatric Occupational Therapy Program as well as establishes goals, objectives, policies and procedures and budget for the Occupational Therapy Program in collaboration with the Clinical Program Managers of One (1) North and Rehabilitation Services and the Director of Ancillary Services.
  •  As able, is cross-trained to administer diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint, home evaluations, and functional ability evaluations to develop appropriate treatment plans for the medical-surgical patients. Coordinates treatment on the medical-surgical unit with the Medical-Surgical Occupational Therapist.
  • Schedules and administers Psychiatric Occupational Therapy Evaluations per established guidelines to develop appropriate treatment plans for patients.
  • Schedules and implements individual treatment plans with appropriate goal setting for psychiatric and medical-surgical patients as assigned to restore function, prevent disability following injury or disease, and assist patients in reaching their maximum level of independence in daily activities toward goals set in initial evaluations.
  • Moves and lifts patients of various weights, size, and age to and from beds and ambulatory equipment and positions them for evaluation and treatment while maintaining patient comfort, safety, and dignity.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, reassessments, progress notes and discharge summaries to provide information to other members of the rehabilitation/psychiatric teams and insurance companies in reference to occupational therapy services rendered and progress achieved, utilizing the format designed by the department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use of Medicare and JCAHO guidelines for documentation and billing. Completes proper billing by the end of each workday and meets acceptable productivity as per the standard.
  • Maintains and orders occupational therapy supplies and equipment and maintains a safe environment for occupational therapy programs.
  • Performs tasks necessary for maintenance and improvement of the department as requested by the Director of Ancillary Services and/or the Clinical Program Managers of One (1) North and Rehabilitation Services.
  • Is responsible for conducting or participating in training medical and nursing personnel, students, and other hospital personnel in psychiatric occupational therapy and rehabilitation techniques and objectives, as needed.
  • Communicates with other team members and provides information to patient’s physician, case management/social work, nursing, insurance company, and/or family or caregiver, as appropriate. Initiates referrals to other disciplines or services when appropriate.
  • Assists in collection of information for Performance Improvement indicators as needed.
  • Attends Patient Rounds and other conferences as appropriate.
  • Supervises and trains Occupational Therapy students accepted for clinical training as well as departmental volunteers.
  • Applies effective cost avoidance practices to the operation of the unit, section, or department.
  • Is responsible for remaining current with all licensures, annual TB tests, and yearly competencies.
  • Will provide in-service training to the appropriate rehab staff upon returning from a seminar.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis.
  • Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution, with successful completion of two (2) supervised clinical internships with a combined duration of at least six (6) months.
  • Two (2) or more years experience with psychiatric occupational therapy preferred.
  • Must have passed or be eligible to take the American Occupational Therapy Certification Examination.
  • Permanent or temporary Occupational Therapist license from the State of Maryland.
  • Current CPR certification.
