Position Summary:
The Environmental Care Technician reports to and working under the direct supervision of an Environmental Care Supervisor, the Environmental Care Technician helps to ensure patient safety and customer satisfaction by providing timely and thorough cleaning services to keep clinical unit/area in orderly, sanitary and attractive condition. Cleans assigned areas using specified products and follows established procedures. Assigned to and completes daily removal of Bio-hazards (regulated medical waste), regular and bulk waste to the appropriate locations. Responsible for loading of same wastes in the various containers, as required by regulatory agencies. Transports trash safely per duty list to ensure timely removal from Hospital areas. Follows medical waste manifesting procedures. Maintains trash containers in a clean and safe condition at all times. Maintains height restrictions of trash in containers. Performs floor care duties per duty list including: carpet extraction and bonneting, floor scrubbing and burning (buffing) and, as assigned, crystalizing and diamond cutting terrazzo floor. Operates equipment safely and effectively. Submits repair work orders as needed to ensure equipment is functional and safe. Ensures sufficient supplies and equipment in designated storage areas at the beginning and end of each shift; and notifies Supervisor or designee when stock is needed to support the shift. Maintains professional conduct at all times. Communicates customer complaints to others, as appropriate. Uses interpersonal skills effectively to communicate to customers, co-workers and supervisors, as appropriate. Addresses customer concerns/questions and channels them to others, as appropriate. Provides outstanding customer service at all times while interacting with patients, visitors and staff. Provides a variety of environmental and clinical support activities to facilitate patient care and customer satisfaction.
Education:
Requires the ability to read at minimum of 8th grade level, and mathematical ability of at least a 6th grade level. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Required Work Experience:
Requires three (3) months of continuous work experience or the successful completion of a JHH/JHHSC-approved OTJ Sponsored Training Program (i.e., Transitional Employment Partnership Program). Six (6) months of industrial housekeeping strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Requires ability to read and understand English in order to follow instructions, job assignments, schedules, work orders and chemical labels. Ability to utilize and understand universal safety precautions when cleaning patient rooms.
- Knowledge of Floor Care or Trash Transport.
- Ability to operate floor care cleaning equipment, vacuum cleaner, carpet extractor or tow motors.
- Must possess effective verbal communication skills and the ability to interface with patients, families, healthcare team members, co-workers and supervisory personnel when necessary.

Salary Range: Minimum /hour - Maximum /hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
