Job Responsibilities:

This position will work with both the Florida Enterprise (“FE”) Practice Group and the Clinical Affairs Practice Group. The Florida Enterprise Practice Group provides strategic advice and counsel to senior and operations leaders on a range of business issues related to the Johns Hopkins Health System’s health care facilities and activities in Florida. These include a specialty-licensed free-standing children’s hospital (Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital), an employed pediatric physician group that includes subspecialists, a children’s medical research institute, and a clinically integrated pediatric network. The Clinical Affairs Practice Group provides legal advice regarding clinical risk, adverse events, patient care issues, patient and regulatory complaints, bioethical issues, guardianships, and medical staff issues. In addition, it provides legal and risk management education for faculty and staff, policy review and revision for legal and risk management implications, medical staff bylaws review and revisions and consultation with leadership on hospital clinical and medical staff risk issues.

Essential Functions:

  • Reviewing, analyzing, drafting and negotiating complex and routine agreements related to clinical and business affairs, including physician employment agreements and agreements with affiliated hospitals and health systems.
  • Advising clinical team and risk management regarding patient care issues, including legal requirements for informed consent, surrogate decision-makers and reproductive health services.
  • Recognizing and advising clients on regulatory, accreditation, and licensure requirements, as well as Anti-Kickback, Stark Law, tax exemption and non-profit law, and other legal concerns.
  • Providing legal support to the Florida risk-management team regarding issues of patient consent, clinical care issues, ethics, and other healthcare-related matters.
  • Providing legal counsel to the hospital medical staff and medical staff committees.
  • Investigating adverse patient outcomes in anticipation of litigation and developing strategic and tactical positions and responses to proposed courses of action.
  • Participating and advising on proactive risk assessments.

Qualifications:

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Continuing legal education involving legal seminars, review and study of legal periodicals and review of judicial decisions and legislative enactments and pronouncements.
  • Seven (7) years of related or relevant experience, including five (5) years of legal practice as a licensed attorney.
  • Of the total experience, three (3) years should include demonstrated leadership responsibilities such as managing projects, assigning work, or leading teams.
  • Florida Bar Membership or qualified for Florida Authorized House Counsel

Salary Range: $165,000 to $195,000 per year. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
